Box Office Report: ‘Guardians’ Smash, ‘Fate’ Hits A Milestone
In his Facebook post that has since gone viral, Gunn admitted that he’s been keeping a close eye on the box office success of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, which earned 54 per cent more in its opening weekend than the original film.
“Guardians 2” has already grossed $427.6 million worldwide – and is on track to top the $773 million total for the series’s first film.
The “Guardians” sequel also topped the domestic debut of Gunn’s original 2014 hit by almost 54 percent. In a very distant second is The Fate of the Furious with $8.5 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Michael Rooker and Yondu and Sean Gunn as Kraglin. Details are sparse on the sequel since we’re still three years away from it hitting theaters, but we do know that it will help set up the next 10 years of movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans will wait and see where it ends up at the box office in relation to its Marvel Studios brethren. It has already banked $951 million outside of the US, bringing its worldwide total up to $1.15 billion. James Gunn, who has already started work on the third Guardians movie, has confirmed that he plans to bring Ayesha and the Sovereign back in the third movie.
He said the oddball characters in “Guardians of the Galaxy” are his way of reaching out to those who feel like he once did. The biggest film of 2017 so far, putting it at $487.6 million in North America – the 8th highest grossing film of all time (swimming past Finding Dory).

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2“, $145 million ($124 million international). With a budget of $200 million, the Galaxy sequel is rated as the second-best opening of the year, following Disney’s Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million). It’s wedged between “Spider-Man 3” ($151.1 million) and “Iron Man 2″ ($128.1 million).
And not only did they manage a stellar domestic debut – the team made more than $280 million overseas.
