Meet Tajiri! April the Giraffe’s Baby Gets a ‘Hopeful’ Name
The male calf was named Tajiri, which means “hope” and “confidence” in Swahili.
According to the Animal Adventure Park, some of the other names that made the list include Geoffrey, Ollie, Patches, and others.
More than two weeks after April the giraffe finally gave birth, her calf’s name has been revealed. Among the options? Patches, Gio, Unity and Noah. Her birth was broadcast to an online audience of more than a million viewers.
“It is a hope for giraffes”, Swilley told USA Today.
Animal Adventure Park posted a brief update Saturday on their Facebook page.
Tajiri will go by “Taj” for short at the zoo.
Animal lovers all over the world who were eager to witness the birth of April’s calf turned to the zoo’s live stream. By the time April’s baby had arrived, that group had as many as 1,800 members. He died five days before the unnamed baby was born. She will raise her calf naturally, and weaning could take between 6 to 10 months, maybe longer. All money raised from the naming contest will be split among giraffe conservation efforts and giraffe care at the adventure park, according to Patch.
