Serena Williams expecting first baby
Williams, who is now ranked number 2 in the world, has not played in a tournament since she won Australia.
“I’m happy to confirm Serena is expecting a baby this fall“, a spokesperson for Williams said by email. The 35 year-old snagged her 23rd title, and subsequently broke Steffi Graff’s Grand Slam record by pulling an upset over her sister, Venus, in the final.
She is also a five-time Tour finals victor, the last of which came in 2014, and was recently picked as the greatest female tennis player of the Open era by BBC Sport users.
Williams is also within touching distance of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 majors, with many expecting her to topple the Australian’s record.
Neither Williams nor Ohanian have posted anything else on social media or commented publicly on Williams’s potential, but her fans instantly chimed in, congratulating her on her latest achievement. “The kind of tennis that [she] plays is a much higher intensity and duration” than what the average woman plays, he said. She will miss all the matches in the 2017 season but will probably return to the court next year.
She added that Williams will not play again this year but was looking forward to doing so in 2018.
Which would mean – based on her “20 weeks” caption – she was with child while winning the first tennis major of the season.
Relatively recent Grand Slam winners such as Li Na and Marion Bartoli retired, while Garbine Muguruza has not followed up on her French Open title of 2016.
Serena joins other tennis players who have left the tour and take up maternity leave.
The professional tennis player incorporates the tone into her everyday wardrobe as well.
“At the same table we first met by chance this time he made it not by chance but by choice”, she wrote.
In March, she withdrew from the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, California, and the Miami Open citing a knee injury.
“She’s already done so much, does she need more?” If the answer will be yes, we imagine it will be tough to see her in Melbourne next year after less than four months since the baby’s birth. Ultimately, I think Azarenka will get back to No. 1 although we can only look well into the future for that.
