Celtics’ Thomas sits out 2nd half with right hip strain

Some were surprised and headlines were made.

Turns out he was right.

But the Cavs played like a team possessed, a team driven to defend its title, and crushed the Celtics, 130-86, to take a 2-0 series lead.

Boston actually avoided a very early knockout punch from Cleveland.

Still, it was the Celtics’ worst home playoff loss ever.

It’s impossible to single out a particular run because the Wine and Gold simply unleashed a 12-minute avalanche on both ends – shooting 58 percent in the period and canning six three-pointers while holding the Celtics to 25 percent shooting and forcing eight turnovers.

James followed that up by finding Tristan Thompson for a basket, making a 22-foot jumper and delivering a pinpoint pass to Kyle Korver for a catch-and-shoot three.

Rounding out the starting five, shooting guard J.R. Smith and center Tristan Thompson combined for 16 points in the Game 2 win.

Just before tipoff Friday night in TD Garden, the National Basketball Association announced that Cavaliers star LeBron James was not among the league’s three MVP finalists for the first time since 2008.

“I don’t want to put that on any one guy”, he said. The guys are really down.

BOSTON (AP) – The Celtics say point guard Isaiah Thomas is sitting out the second half of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against Cleveland because of a right hip strain. The damage had been done. Kevin Love had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Cleveland, which led by 14 points after one quarter, by 72-31 at the half and by 46 after three. The shine of getting the first overall pick had worn off (even if momentarily) after the Game 1 loss. “I know what I bring to the table”, he said.

Still, there was no answer.

“It is embarrassing”, he said. I hope not. I mean they’re a good team, they play hard.

The Cavaliers took Game 1, 117-104, and it was evident that all the rest they received was not a problem.

There is one adjective, though, that you won’t hear come from the Cleveland locker room. They’ve been punking us two games in a row. You looked at me insane.

“Today I thought he looked much different in the first half”, Stevens said. We had a couple miscues defensively where we gave up some open looks. “We just got to attack the ball and I think we’ll be fine”. There’s no complacency with us right now. “But we like where we’re headed”.

What’s in store for Games 3 and 4 if the Cavaliers can play better?

Irving accounted for three of those points, one on a technical free throw and two more on a driving layup. Can LeBron best Michael Jordan’s 63, or is he playing too efficiently to take on that type of the scoring load? The only thing that can stop him is the hoisting of another trophy.
