McIlroy withdraws from BMW PGA Championship with rib injury
There is only weeks between the US Open and the Open Championship at Birkdale and McIlroy is due to play in two events between them – the Travelers Championhsip in CT and the Irish Open, at Portstewart, the tournament he, himself, promotes.
Rory McIlroy will sit out the European Tour flagship event next week to make sure a recurring rib injury heals.
Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from next week’s BMW PGA Championship after suffering a “reaction” to a previous rib injury. “I will now continue the process of preparing my game for. the rest of the season”.
He admitted to fears over a niggling injury after competing in last week’s Players Championship in Florida.
That will take place in less than a month, with McIlroy scheduled for just one start before then, in the Memorial tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus, which begins in a fortnight’s time.
“I went back at it again on Friday [May 5], and instead of maybe gradually building up again, I hit balls for four or five hours and did the same on Saturday”, McIlroy said.
“I’ve been struggling with it a bit this week, sort of felt it for the first time on Sunday”, he said previously. Considering this schedule, which was due to feature seven tournaments in 11 weeks, skipping Wentworth is probably a very wise decision.
