Rafael Nadal sets up Novak Djokovic semi-final at Madrid Open

This is not counting the three defeats in the finals this season, plus strong and stable tennis throughout the year in Madrid, Rafa has already won three wins, defeating Belgian Goffen 7: 6, 6: 2 without a problem in the quarter-finals.

In the women’s Madrid Open, Canadian Eugenie Bouchard advanced on Wednesday when top seed Angelique Kerber retired with a hamstring injury trailing 6-3, 5-0 in their third-round match. “But then the first match of any tournament is not easy”. The Serb, with his lethal backhand that has always troubled Nadal, has it in him to stop the King of Clay from reigning supreme today.

Novak Djokovic staved off a huge upset in his first match since splitting with his long-time coaching team to beat Nicolas Almagro 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 in the second round of the Madrid Masters Wednesday.

Neither man was stressed on serve for much of the set.

Rafael Nadal has been on an incredible run on clay this year, winning titles at Barcelona and Monte Carlo, but he will face a stern test in the Madrid Open semi-final against defending champion Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios could face Rafael Nadal in a blockbuster third-round clash on Thursday after easily seeing off Ryan Harrison 6-3, 6-3.

Djokovic cruised in the first set by breaking the 76th-ranked Almagro three times.

Djokovic, who has refused to rule out appointing Andre Agassi as coach, prowled around the court and had the bit between his teeth as he stayed in the hunt for only a second title of the year with the French Open on the horizon. Despite being far from his best against the Italian, Nadal fought hard to win the match. “So to win the matches like this definitely helps confidence”.

Djokovic won in Doha to start the year but failed to make it past the quarterfinals in the following four tournaments he played since then.

After failing to make the quarter-finals at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the 2015 French Open victor will be hoping for drastic improvement at the Internazionali d’Italia next week.

“Tomorrow there’s going to be one victor, that’s Uniqlo I’m sure”, Djokovic joked, referring to the Japanese casual wear label that sponsors the duo.

Cuevas and Thiem have only faced each other once, with Cuevas winning in four sets at the French Open two years ago.

“One break was enough, 5-4, 6-5, both sets”. He threw his racket on the ground three times in a row after losing a decisive point in the tiebreaker.

“I just want to go there and (play) my game, because if I do, I have a big chance to win”, Halep said. In total this season, Nadal has 37 matches and 32 wins. He withdrew from Barcelona last month because of a right wrist injury. I was in trouble and I managed to get my way out of it with some great gets.

“It’s been feeling good, better than I expected”, Nishikori told the media in Madrid. Mladenovic will play eighth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation, who easily defeated Canadian Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-0.
