Real survive early Atletico onslaught to reach final

We’re in the Champions League final and we’re doing well in LaLiga, but we haven’t won anything just yet.

Dybala and Juventus have the chance to dethrone Zidane’s defending champions Madrid at Millennium Stadium on June 3, but the Argentina worldwide heaped praise on the Turin favourite.

Defending champion Real Madrid withstood an early onslaught by Atletico Madrid to reach a third Champions League final in four years despite a 2-1 loss to its city rival on Wednesday.

Gareth Bale still isn’t training with the team, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane revealed on Saturday.

The 33-year-old is not a stranger on the European stage as in each of his appearances in the Champions League final he has come away with a winners medal, but speaking at an event in Barcelona.

TRTWorld’s Samantha Johnson has more. “We still need to keep improving, the next step is not small, it is very big, but if we can improve then there is a future”.

“We’re Real Madrid and we showed that we have more experience”, added the prolific Portuguese, whose hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg had given Real a huge advantage in the tie.

He said: “It’ll be a wonderful final, we’ve had a similar path and both teams deserve to be there”.

The goal allowed Madrid to match Bayern Munich’s record of 61 consecutive games scoring at least one goal in all competitions, a feat the German club achieved from 2013-14. Antoine Griezmann stepped up and fired the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-nil and give his side the boost they needed.

Zidane has used the depth of his squad to great effect in recent weeks by making wholesale changes for La Liga games sandwiched between Champions League encounters.

The fans pushed the hosts on from the start and after 12 minutes Saul Niguez headed home. “We were talking after the game and I asked him how he got out of there”.

Benzema wriggled out of a seemingly impossible situation surrounded by three Atletico defenders and crossed for Toni Kroos, whose initial effort was blocked by Oblak before Isco shot home the rebound.

“We’ll go there with everything we’ve got and we’ll fight to produce a good performance to finish the season strongly”.
