Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin confirm

It didn’t matter whether fans had on Canelo or Chavez Jr. headbands, which were being sold at a feverish rate, what truly mattered was that they were there to celebrate their country’s rich boxing history.

The fight is a done deal for September 16 according to Oscar De La Hoya at the post-fight press conference.

It was a WWE-style display that showed how little concern the Alvarez camp had for Chavez.

Getting the Raiders out of Oakland into Las Vegas was a piece of cake.

Last week, 90,000 fans packed Wembley Stadium in London for a heavyweight thriller.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez dominated his Mexican compatriot Julio Cesar Chavez Jr from bell to bell for a shutout decision win.

That appears to be in the past, as the fight the boxing world has clamored for is just over the horizon.

Critics charged that Alvarez was afraid of the fight – or that de la Hoya didn’t want to risk the top fighter in the Golden Boy stable. Right now, I think everyone is excited for September.

All of Mexico will be focused on Las Vegas as Alvarez tries to validate his standing as the best Mexican fighter of this era by beating the son of Mexico’s all-time best fighter. Amir Khan and Chavez Jr, with the latter setting a new attendance record at 20,510.

“Tonight I showed I could move and box”, Alvarez said. “I’ve shown I can do lots of things in the ring, anything a fighter brings-I’ve shown I can showcase myself”, said Alvarez.

Chavez Jnr, 31, believes this will be the biggest win of his career as he put persistent weight problems behind him for a purse of about £5m. Golovkin weighed in at 159.6 pounds before winning a unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs in March for his 18th title defense.

Luck is for the mediocre people“, Alvarez responded, prompting a smile from GGG. “Right now, we are living in a great moment for the sport”.

Alvarez was guaranteed $5 million and Chavez $3 million. I’ve never feared anyone, since I was 16 fighting as a professional.

There have been plenty of barbs traded since the fight was announced. While Chavez Jr. last all 12 rounds, it really didn’t matter.

On Saturday, still in the ring after beating Chavez Jr., Alvarez was asked who he wanted to fight next. Alvarez had to relinquish his WBC belt to Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) a year ago when he declined a mandatory challenge. [Trainer] Nacho [Beristain] told me to do that, but the strategy didn’t work.

“I feel I can knock him out”.

Indeed Mayweather beat one of the protagonists competing tonight, Canelo, but the young Mexican has since improved greatly through the defeat and has proven himself time and time again since.

Once he was in the ring he shook Alvarez’s hand and then the two announced that they have agreed to fight on September 16 on HBO pay per view.

Now the hope is for a second entertaining big fight in as many weeks.
