Trump’s Troubles At Home Likely Won’t Hold Him Down In Saudi Arabia

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo left Jakarta on Saturday for Saudi Arabia to attend the Arab-Islamic-American Summit, which will be held on May 21 in Riyadh.

Their visit to Saudi Arabia comes as his administration reels from the fallout of his firing of FBI Director James Comey and after being accused of Islamaphobia for trying to impose a travel ban on people coming to the U.S. from Muslim-majority nations (though Saudi Arabia wasn’t included in that ban).
The US president’s visit to the kingdom, which will be followed by talks in Israel, the Vatican and with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders in Italy, has been met with unprecedented fanfare in Riyadh. The trip has been billed as a chance to visit places sacred to three of the world’s major religions while including meetings with Arab, Israeli and European leaders. He also told them that firing Comey had “taken off” the “great pressure” he was feeling from the investigation, the Times reported.
The speech envisions new partnerships with America’s traditional allies in the Middle East. The first couple’s foreign trip came with the administration recently being in turmoil after the sudden dismissal of former FBI Director James Comey.

In another development, the Washington Post said a current White House official close to Trump was a significant “person of interest” in the investigation into possible ties between Trump’s presidential campaign previous year and Russian Federation.
Mr Trump caused controversy during his campaign by calling for Muslims to be temporarily banned from entering the U.S. over security concerns.
Trump has been vocal in his criticism of the decision to appoint a special counsel to oversee an inquiry into alleged Russian influence on the U.S. election.
