Wayne Rooney unlikely to play at Old Trafford again this season – Mourinho
Jose Mourinho is set to leave out his big names for the essentially meaningless clash with Palace at Old Trafford, prioritising Wednesday’s UEFA Europa League final against Ajax, their last chance to win serious silverware this season and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. For the players as well because they’ve got good bonuses for the position they finish in the league so they are well aware of what it means.
Mourinho confirmed Joel Pereira, Kieran O’Hara, Scott McTominay, Josh Harrop, Matthew Willock, Zachary Dearnley and 16-year-old Angel Gomes will be involved on Sunday. I just think he has missed a trick.
“But I think the best debut for a young player is in the middle of an experienced structure, where he can be supported“. Lots of them together, I think no.
Now, he will rest everybody this week and the next time they play, the last time they played together as a team would have been against Celta Vigo.
“With so many at the same time, I think they really need my support, (reserves manager) Nicky Butt’s support (and) supporters to understand the hard job they have, because it will not be an easy one for them”.
Palace have failed to win any of their five Premier League away fixtures on the final day, conceding 14 goals (D2, L3).
Rooney, 31, faces an uncertain future at United having lost his regular start place under Mourinho this season.
‘Paul is fine, ‘ said Mourinho.
“The backroom staff are of far greater importance to me than an extra player sometimes, because they’re the ones who deliver, and help the players deliver on a regular basis”.
However, Wayne Rooney is not guaranteed to feature in what would nearly certainly be his United farewell after 13 years at the club.
Steve Bower: “So it’s the game Jose Mourinho didn’t want, on the day he didn’t want; the week ahead will determine if it turns out to be the season he didn’t want, with events in Stockholm on Wednesday determining whether he has restored the Champions League nights for Manchester United”. I think a team shouldn’t play two Europe competitions in the same season, they should go home.
The Portuguese youngster, who begun this season on loan at Primera Liga side Belenenses, was brought back to Old Trafford in January and handed his first senior appearance against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup.
