WH Official: NYT, WaPo Reports Are ‘Coordinated Attack’ on Trump

The memo is said to have been written by Mr Comey the day after Mr Flynn resigned.

FBI Director James Comey prepares to testify on Capitol Hill on May 3.

Among the most explosive reports: that Trump earlier this year asked for a pledge of personal loyalty from Comey, and that the president asked Comey to drop an investigation into his then-national security adviser, Mike Flynn.

Making the matter more urgent: On Friday, the New York Times reported Trump told Russian diplomats that firing Comey took “great pressure” off the president.

On May 19, the New York Times reported that Trump told Russian envoys at the White House the day after Comey’s firing that he thought Comey was a “nut job”.

US President Donald Trump will not announce the new director of the coveted Federal Bureau of Investigation ahead of his maiden foreign trip beginning today, the White House has said. Trump said as much in one televised interview, but the administration has offered changing justifications for the firing.

Former FBI director James Comey has agreed to testify in open session before the Senate Intelligence Committee about the bureau’s investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, intensifying President Donald Trump’s political troubles.

“Everybody applauded”, said Democratic representative Emmanuel Cleaver of Missouri.

The Flynn Intel Group was paid for research on Fethullah Gulen, a cleric who Turkey’s current president believes was responsible for a coup attempt last summer. Stay tuned on this.

Rosenstein is at the center of Washington’s most independent investigation into Russian Federation and Trump ties.

The investigation is examining the extent of contact between the Trump campaign and Russian state officials, business connections to Russia and whether there is any connection to the hacking of emails between Hilary Clinton’s campaign and senior Democrats. But ultimately, Mueller is answerable to the Justice Department. But Trump later contradicted the original narrative when he said that he made the decision alone after considering several factors, including what he termed the “Russia thing”.

But Senate Judiciary Committee leaders – who also wanted Comey to testify before their panel in the wake of his dismissal – criticized the former director’s decision to appear only before the Intelligence Committee.

The White House on Friday predicted that the investigation would back up Trump’s account. And what does writing the memo anyway say about Rosenstein’s allegiances?

“I wrote it”, Rosenstein said.

The appointment of Mueller as special counsel has drawn generally favorable comments from Democrats and from some Republicans as well.

The news broke shortly after Trump took off for his critically important five-country, eight-day foreign trip, the first of his presidency.

“We’re a nation of laws”, was all Sen.

Rosenstein also said he was not aware that Comey had requested more resources for the Russian Federation probe before he was sacked, as some reports have alleged. But he added: “I haven’t lost my confidence in the president to be our president, I just haven’t”.

The person is a senior White House adviser “close to the president”, but the unnamed sources would not identify that official, the Post reported.

“The committee looks forward to receiving testimony from the former director on his role in the development of the intelligence community assessment on Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections”, Efe quoted the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman as saying. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), in May.

Investigators into Russian election meddling are now also probing whether White House officials have engaged in a cover-up, according to members of Congress who were briefed Friday by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

But the special counsel’s investigation arguably takes priority over all that.
