Microsoft Build 2017 Day 2 highlights

Microsoft also discussed virtual reality – what it calls “mixed reality” – and unveiled handheld motion controllers for the range of VR headsets the firm works with, alongside its own HoloLens headset.

Well, that’s surprising. At its Build 2017 conference, Microsoft announced that Apple’s iTunes will be coming to the Windows Store by the year end.

Unlike the high-level wonkiness of the previous day, day 2 of the company’s Build developers conference had a lot for average consumers across the operating system spectrum.

The other major feature is Microsoft Graph, which will connect Windows with iOS and Android devices to create a connected experience across Microsoft services across all three platforms. So you could “look back” at, say, a Microsoft Word document you only opened on your iPhone. “Cortana asks if you want to pick up where you left in your app, doc, or website”, said Myerson in a blog post.

The same report mentions that Microsoft has explained how Cortana would be able to actually leverage this feature. Aptly called the Fall Creator’s Update, there are quite a few features expected to hit the operating system.

Save your disk space: You can directly access your files from the cloud without using storage space on your device with OneDrive Files On-Demand. This was previously known as Project Neon and seems to be influenced by Google’s Material Design. Clipboard is a fast and easy way to copy and paste just about anything between connected devices, whether on a Windows PC or your favourite mobile phone, he noted.

Other features of the update include Story Mix, which is created to make video editing easier. It lets you add soundtracks, annotations, transitions, special effects, and even allow users to add 3D objects to your photos and videos to view in mixed reality. Notably, this one has the Windows Ink support to write on photos and videos easily. The iTunes app will have full iPhone support and users will essentially get the same iTunes experience from the Windows Store app that the existing Windows app now offers.
