Thunderstorm chances return for holiday weekend

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of central and eastern Virginia until 10 p.m., including Richmond, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Farmville, Fredericksburg and Hampton Roads.

Just as the WXII12 Weather team analyzes your forecasts, meteorologists at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, are investigating severe potential days in advance of storm threats. A few ingredients are coming together for some of these storms to be on the strong to severe side with locally high winds and hail being the main concern. There continues to be uncertainties with coverage and timing due to activity this morning, but overall there is a risk of severe weather especially in east-central KS by this afternoon.

Sunday Night will be partly cloudy with a spotty evening shower or storm. HAZARD.60 miles per hour wind gusts and quarter size hail.

Another complex of heavy thunderstorms could fire up into Saturday evening in Tennessee, eastern Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. These storms could include high winds and large hail. Some less serious severe storm risks exist farther east into Virginia and North Carolina.

Another suspected tornado was reported near Falcon, Missouri, and emergency management reported damage from another possible tornado near Laclede. While there will be a threat of severe weather across eastern Kansas and all of Missouri, the focus for the most damaging and unsafe severe weather will be in areas along and south of I-70 between noon and 9 p.m.

“We are expecting the potential for hail up to the size of baseballs with some of these storms”, he said.

Most areas will be dry on Sunday, with a attractive Memorial Day expected across the bi-state.

The rest of the holiday weekend looks nice with a partly sunny sky on Sunday and more sunshine expected on Monday.

Showers and storms move in through the overnight hours and then we will see clearing through the early afternoon.

That front will try to move away on Wednesday, but there will still be a slight chance of a storm on Wednesday with highs remaining in the middle 80s.
