Armed man taken into custody at Orlando Airport
The area was contained and should have minimal impact to the airport’s operations, officials said.
No one was hurt, but there was confusion as travellers posted videos and photos of police with their weapons.
Part of the airport was temporarily evacuated and traffic going into the airport was halted for a short time.
A JetBlue representative said the company had experienced some delayed flights because of the incident and because of weather.
“Incident ongoing involving man with weapon in terminal – Level 1 A-side, rental vehicle area”. He pointed a gun at the officers and said “shoot me, shoot me! according to Chief Mina”.
There were no immediate indications that the incident at Orlando airport was terror-related.
“We watched 14 police cars pass us the other way just after 8 in the evening”, he said. “Will post updates as we receive them”, Orlando Police tweeted 40 minutes later.
Police say a gunman at the Orlando International Airport has been taken into custody and that everyone is safe.
Hess called 911 and was told by an operator there were reports of a man with a gun in one of the rental auto parking lots. Police say he was formerly in the military, and will be kept in custody in for a mental health evaluation.
