Latest developments in North Korea

The article indicates that Pyongyang has made advances in its missile technology since North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said in his New Year’s speech that the country was in the final stages of developing ICBM technology.

North Korea says it has tested a new type of cruise missile that is a powerful means of attacking enemy warships, a day after South Korea’s military detected projectiles fired from the eastern coastal town of Wonsan.

“The great success of test-firing an intercontinental ballistic missile, which we are sure to achieve, will mark a historic watershed moment in the failure of the USA hostile policy against us”, North Korean state media claimed, asserting that a nuclear-armed long-range missile would guarantee a viable nuclear deterrence strategy.

The launch came days after USA aircraft carriers USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan left those waters after joint exercises with the South Korean navy.

North Korea owns around 300 unmanned aerial vehicles of different types including reconnaissance, target and combat drones, the United Nations said in a report a year ago.

Additionally, China pressing North Korea to the point of regime collapse would contradict its interests, as Beijing doesn’t want to face a strong, democratic, unified Korea on its border that could play host to U.S. military installations.

It marked the fifth missile test-fire by the North since liberal South Korean President Moon Jae-in took office May 10.

North Korea may be close to testing an intercontinental ballistic missile, state media suggested Saturday. On Monday, North Korea rejected a Seoul civic right group’s offer to provide anti-malaria supplies.

The launch of the ground-based interceptor last week was the first since a test that the Missile Defense Agency called a success in June 2014 – after two that failed in 2010. The two other fishermen who want to return home will be repatriated.

Last year, South Korea fired warning shots at a suspected North Korean drone, forcing it to turn back. The improved range indicates North Korea is pursuing weapons capable of reaching US aircraft carriers that operate from deeper positions, he said.

Pyongyang often accuses Seoul of kidnapping its citizens and forcing them to defect to the South. Analysts say the most recent weapons test were both a way to make political demands clear to foreign leaders and a way to pressure Moon. Its mission is to develop a missile able to deliver a nuclear warhead to the continental United States.

But it may assuage the administration of US President Donald Trump, which has leant heavily on Beijing to help rein in Pyongyang.
