Seattle police kill pregnant Black mom who called 911 for help
But family members, who say that Lyles had been struggling over the past year in particular with some kind of mental health trouble, maintain that deadly force wasn’t necessary.
Just before the shooting, two officers responded to a burglary call at the property at around 10 a.m, said SPD Detective Mark Jamieson. The children in the apartment were unharmed and police are trying to determine if they witnessed the shooting.
How is a cop surprised that a woman reporting a burglary, at home alone with her children would answer the door with a weapon or some form of protection?
Both Seattle Police Department officers opened fire on the woman, named by family as Charleena Lyles, inside the apartment building after they said she confronted them brandishing a knife, police said.
A one-officer response would have been the norm, but “hazard information” linked to a previous police encounter with Lyles – she’d been arrested June 5 for obstruction of a public official and harassment, the Times reported – prompted the doubled-up presence, Jamieson said.
He said Seattle Police officers, who were uninjured, administered first aid until the fire department arrived.
Charleena Lyles, 30, was fatally shot by police after she allegedly displayed a knife to officers. The Seattle Police Department tells the Times that both officers are white. Lyles was the subject of a 2008 news story about how she entered a program for at-risk youth, using it to get off welfare and get a full-time job. “I could have taken her down”.
Monika Williams says her sister was tiny and had mental health problems. “They could have taken her down”.
The officers involved in the incident are expected to be placed on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
Her family also said she found out she was three months pregnant while in jail.
Several mourners gathered outside the apartment complex early on Sunday evening for a vigil and memorial for Lyles, according to photos posted online by local media. They arrived at Brettler Family Place 3 and went up to the fourth floor. “They shot my mom”, Murray said the 10-year-old told her as she took the kids outside. “My thoughts are with the many people impacted, including three children and the responding officers”, he said in a statement.
“As you can imagine, this is going to be a very thorough investigation“, he added.
