A day later, Rosenstein appointed Mueller, who was at the helm of the Federal Bureau of Investigation during the September 11 attacks, as special counsel.

Comey told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump had directed him to drop an agency investigation into Flynn.

Spicer also defended Rosenstein, telling Fox Business on the night of the firing that he is “someone who has earned bipartisan support and most recently served as the U.S. attorney for Maryland under President Obama”. While the Trump administration initially said that letter was the reason the president fired Comey on May 9, Trump later said he did so because of the “Russia thing.”Comey told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump fired him because of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Russian Federation probe”.

Several news reports said Mueller plans to interview key USA national security officials about Trump’s comments seeking an end to the investigation of contacts his first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, had with Russia’s ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak.

Donald Trump himself is under direct investigation for obstruction of justice by the special counsel’s office.

All of those campaign advisers had been previously linked to FBI or congressional investigations of possible collusion with Russian Federation, but Gates had not.

But Sen. Marco Rubio said Sunday that he does not expect Trump to seek to fire them. Trump fired Comey on May 9.

At a ceremony last month to welcome Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, the Justice Department’s third-ranking official, Rosenstein joked awkwardly about being at the center of criticism since taking office, according to people who were in the room. The White House used a memo he wrote to justify Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, but Trump’s firing of Comey may now be part of the probe.

“Failure to follow these protocols could result in criminal or civil penalties, and could form the basis of legal claims, legal presumptions, or jury instructions relating to spoliation of evidence”, the memo warns former Trump transition team members.

Rosenstein, the official who would be responsible for dismissing Mueller, told USA lawmakers he would fire him only with good cause.US intelligence agencies concluded in a report issued in January that Russian Federation interfered in the presidential race to try to help Trump win, in part by hacking and releasing emails damaging to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.Moscow has denied any interference.
