Consumer Issues Stemming From the GOP Health Care Initiative
“I can not support a piece of legislation that takes insurance away from tens of millions of Americans”, he said at a news conference in Las Vegas, standing next to Nevada’s Republican governor, Brian Sandoval.
“I’d like to say love, but like”, was all he could hope for.
The Senate plan, like the bill passed earlier this year by the U.S. House, would roll back the expansion of Medicaid, the federal-state health insurance program for poor and disabled people, while cutting taxes for the wealthy.
Four Republican senators said they are unable for vote for the Senate’s healthcare bill as written, jeopardizing its passage. BRCA will result in many Americans-especially low- and moderate-income and older Americans-paying thousands more in premiums for skimpier health plans.
With only a slim Republican majority in the Senate, any dissent in the GOP could lead to the failure of the legislation, known as the Better Care Act.
Hours after the measure was unveiled to Congress, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah said in a joint statement that they were not ready to vote in favour of the legislation.
“For a long time you had one side just say repeal, you had one side say don’t change a word, and now we’ve got this effort that seems to be more geared towards one side saying we repealed Obamacare then actually fix health care and I think that’s disappointing”, said Warner.
“It would be so great if the Democrats and Republicans could get together, wrap their arms around it and come up with something that everybody’s happy with”, the president said.
States could not get exemptions to Obama’s prohibition against charging higher premiums for some people with pre-existing medical conditions, but the subsidies would be lower, making coverage less affordable, Pearson said.
Sandoval said he would do “everything in my power” to make sure those people can maintain the quality of life they now have.
If three Republicans defect, the party can not reach the majority vote it needs to pass the measure.
That’s not sitting well with GOP Sen.
Republicans have a 52 to 48 majority in the Senate.
In his address, Trump went on to call for congressional Democrats to muster the political courage to support the measure, “instead of obstructing, always obstructing change”. Republican Reps. Dave Reichert, R-Auburn, and Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Vancouver, also voted against the House version of the health-care bill. So it would basically erode the ability of states to pay for their Medicaid programs. According to Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, 210,000 Nevada residents were covered by Medicaid thanks to the its expansion under the Affordable Care Act.
The 142-page bill also provides a short-term stabilization fund for state-level individual marketplaces through 2021 to help incentivize insurance companies to stay in the markets and offer more choice to consumers, and repeals the individual and employer mandates to buy health insurance.
